The Organisation

Global Evergreening Alliance (GEA) is a membership-based organisation that develops long-term solutions to restore degraded lands and improve livelihoods on a globally significant scale. We bring together some of the world’s most capable development and environmental NGOs, research, and scientific organisations to support and facilitate massive-scale environmental restoration and sustainable agriculture projects. Together we build on our shared vision of resilient landscapes and agricultural systems, a safe climate and better livelihoods for rural communities. We are currently implementing Africa’s largest ever community-led land restoration project: Restore Africa.

The Position

The Global Evergreening Alliance's Project Development and Partnerships (PDP) team is seeking a highly driven PDP Portfolio Manager to lead the development of proposals for large-scale land restoration projects in Africa, in collaboration with investors/donors and Global Evergreening Alliance in-country members.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Lead the development of proposals for large-scale land restoration projects in Africa

  • Work with GEA’s Business Development team to identify and determine the suitability of funding opportunities, including preliminary engagement with donors/investors
  • Identify and assess GEA members with the appropriate capacity to assist with proposal development in the specified country, and to subsequently lead project implementation
  • Coordinate the preparation of pre-feasibility and/or feasibility studies for specific donors/investors (when required as part of project design)
  • Prepare and lead project design workshops (in-country or virtual) in collaboration with other GEA teams and with GEA members
  • This may require building the capacity of GEA members in certain elements of the project design, with the support of other GEA teams
  • Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with GEA members to ensure a collaborative approach to proposal development
  • Build an awareness of relevant government policies and priorities in the specified country, and ensure appropriate engagement with government stakeholders during project design
  • Ensure the timely production of high-quality project proposals, including project descriptions, logical frameworks, budgets, risk analyses, and similar deliverables – requiring the coordination of inputs from GEA members and other teams within GEA, providing constructive feedback, and finalising the documents for presentation to donors/investors
  • Facilitate due diligence analysis on the implementing partners by the donor/investor, as required
  • Facilitate the handover of the project to GEA’s Implementation team once the proposal is approved
  • Continue to engage with the project on an as-needed basis while the inception phase is undertaken (led by the Implementation team

Manage relationships with external partners

  • Develop a strong understanding of the structures, policies, and strategies of GEA members involved in ongoing project design
  • Engage regularly with GEA members throughout the proposal design process, ensuring that deliverables and deadlines are clearly communicated and progress is monitored
  • Participate in initial discussions with project donors/investors, and provide information and input as required for funding agreements, contracts, or similar documents
  • Participation in ongoing discussions with project donors/investors as project design is undertaken, ensuring clear communication of progress
  • Ensure that all communication and decision-making is appropriately documented
  • Support the Project Development and Partnerships Project Officer in ensuring that the stakeholder database is kept up to date

Contribute to the strengthening of systems, processes and procedures relating to project design in GEA

  • Work with colleagues in the Project Development and Partnerships team, and in other GEA teams, to proactively identify opportunities to improve systems, processes and procedures relating to project design
  • Identify and implement solutions to challenges faced during project design

Other duties

  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative working environment in the Project Development and Partnerships team, and GEA more broadly
  • Represent GEA when required at events or other external meetings
  • Perform other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Project Development and Partnerships Manager (which may relate to regions other than Africa)


Key Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in international development, environmental science, agriculture, climate change, natural resource management or similar
  • Minimum of three years experience with projects relating to rural development, agriculture, environmental conservation, ecosystem services, climate change mitigation, or similar
  • Demonstrated experience in writing proposals, tenders, bids or similar documents for donors, investors or other funders in an international development context
  • Strong project and program design skills, including the development of logical frameworks, project budgets, risk assessments, and similar deliverables
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to build and manage relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks, manage heavy workloads, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a proactive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Excellent spoken and written skills in English


Other Relevant Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Project experience in African countries would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of or experience with international climate policy frameworks would be highly regarded
  • Knowledge of or experience with agroforestry and/or carbon sequestration projects and associated methodologies would be beneficial
