We are currently implementing Africa's largest ever community-led land restoration project: Restore Africa.
The Opportunity
The Program Coordination Unit of GEA is seeking a passionate, motivated, and experienced Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Officers to support Restore Africa Program partners in Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda with monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) processes and ensuring compliance with Gold Standard certification requirements. The MRV Officers will ensure high-quality data collection, management, and reporting to verify the carbon sequestration, environmental benefits, and socio-economic impacts of the project in liaison with the Alliance's technical departments.
Please note: to apply for this role, you must be willing to work/have working rights in Kenya, Malawi or Uganda with some travel likely across the East and Southern Africa region.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
As part of the regional Program Coordination Unit team, the role will be responsible for: monitoring and data collection, compliance and documentation, reporting and communication of data processes, support of the project verification processes, partner capacity building, and stakeholder engagement support.
- Overseeing filed data collection on tree growth, carbon sequestration, and land restoration activities, outputs and outcomes.
- Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of project data through regular quality assurance checks and audits.
- Ensuring timely submission of data from the partners and uploading in the program database.
- Supporting compilation and analysis of project data to produce periodic reports on project progress, outcomes, and impact.
- Supporting preparation of reports and documentation required for Carbon Standards certification and audits.
- Ensuring all MRV activities comply with Gold Standard and other relevant framework and standards.
- Maintaining comprehensive documentation of MRV processes and outcomes
- Working closely with the relevant internal stakeholders and in-country partners to coordinate third-party verification, audits and certification processes in country.
- Supporting knowledge sharing, training and coaching of relevant partner staff and community members on data collection and MRV processes.
- Promote awareness of Carbon Standards rules and requirements among project stakeholders.
- Working closely with partners, government agencies, and other stakeholder to ensure alignment of MRV activities with project objectives and supporting project learning processes.
Key Selection Criteria
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Monitoring and Evaluation, Statistics or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
- At least three years of experience in MRV processes for environmental or agroforestry projects.
- Experience working on projects certified by Gold Standard or similar frameworks.
- Experience in climate change, land restoration and related topics and understanding of climate finance mechanisms and carbon markets.
- Proficiency in data management and analysis tools (e.g., Excel, GIS, or statistical software)
- Familiarity with carbon accounting methodologies.
- Strong understanding of agroforestry practices and sustainable land management as well as local environmental and forestry regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to adapt to dynamic project needs and work under minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated understanding of project M&E approaches.
- Knowledge and experience in using data capture tools such as Kobo Toolbox or ODK Survey 123/CTO, Field Maps etc as well as GIS (QGIS and/or ArcPro) used for mapping, analysis is essential.
